LOCI - Helping Recovering Evangelicals Understand God's Salvation

Justification for Evangelicals -  Rev. Thomas Olson

The doctrine of justification brings comfort to Evangelicals and to all of us when it is taught according to God's own teaching. It is the Gospel--Justification is the forgiveness of sins. Learn how the teaching on justification has been twisted and what the truth is, both for your own sake and for those around you. The danger of false teaching on justification is not only among those outside Lutheranism. It is a matter of the utmost importance for all who love the truth. Come, grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and be comforted.

Rev. Thomas Olson is pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Tryon, NC.

Helping Recovering Evangelicals Understand God’s Word - Law and Gospel/Christocentricity – Rev. Josh Haugen

Pastor Haugen’s presentation will cover the Lutheran approach to Holy Scripture, especially in terms of the Law/Gospel distinction and Christocentricity.  As example of how this is done he will explore the Wisdom literature of the Old Testament, especially Proverbs, which today’s evangelicals tend to interpret as a bunch of disjointed law statements.  Instead, he will show that the wisdom literature of the Old Testament is the formidable argument of the understanding of the world verses the Wisdom of God manifested among and in us.

Rev. Joshua A. Haugen is pastor of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Greensboro, NC.

We start at 11:00am. Bring a sack lunch.

LOCI - One Former Evangelical Pastor's Journey into Lutheranism - Rev. Devin Kerns

This doctrinal and practical lecture traces Pastor Kerns’ conversion from American Evangelicalism to confessional Lutheranism.  Pastor Kerns writes, “It will show how what started as a problem with our corporate worship (enthusiasm) led to a full-blown worship war.  This was a war I ultimately lost.  Then, by way of studying various denominations, I became very impressed with what I found in the LCMS.  Having then studied the tenets of Lutheranism, I presented my desire for our non-denominational church to officially affiliate with the LCMS.  That lead to my resignation.  I waged yet another war that I lost.  What I share will not be terribly dour, actually, I am confident and hopeful that there are many more American Evangelicals who long for the clarity and assurance that the Lutheran Confessions bring.”

Rev. Devin Kerns is currently going through the colloquy process to become a rostered LCMS pastor.  He has completed his vicarage and is waiting for his final approval and then call to an LCMS congregation.

We start at 11:00am. Bring a sack lunch.

LOCI - Early Church Heresies - Rev. John Drosendahl

What sort of heresies cropped up in the Early Church during the days of the Apostles? Scripture itself gives us several clues as to the unique false teachings of that era. Unlike today when most denials of the Faith center upon rejecting the divinity of Jesus, this was not the issue for the Early Church. It was the *humanity* of Jesus which was questioned at that time. From the Cerinthians who had infiltrated the congregations to which St. John wrote, to the proto-gnostics against whom Peter & Jude penned their epistles, we will look at the scriptural witness of these early heresies, with a consideration of the Greek philosophies which so quickly began to influence the faithful.

Rev. John Drosendahl  serves as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church, Goldsboro, NC and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wilson, NC.

We start at 11:00am. Bring a sack lunch.

LOCI: Catechesis in the Early Church - Rev. Chris Stout

In the early church, Catechemans were adults whom God was releasing from a pagan worldview into His light and grace and into a Christian worldview.  In a present church that too often waters down teaching because it believe that this inhibits church growth, a brief study on the early church's intense and rigorous Biblical and liturgical teaching is refreshing.  They cared less about growth than they did of changing the heart, life and mind through God's Word.  We will focus on 2 aspects:  how things were taught and what was taught.  We'll focus on the how using "The Apostolic Tradition" of Hippolytus of Rome (http://www.bombaxo.com/hippolytus.html) and the what using Augustine's "On Faith, Hope and Love" (http://www.tertullian.org/fathers/augustine_enchiridion_02_trans.htm).  We start at 11:00am. Bring a sack lunch.

LOCI - "Martyrdom in the Early Church"

with Rev. Jeffrey W. Ware of All Saints Lutheran Church, Charlotte, NC
“The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church” (Tertullian).  Throughout the history of the church the testimony of the martyrs has been a source of encouragement to the faithful.  Join us Saturday, March 21st as we explore some of these stories.  We will look at the historical and cultural situations that led to early Christian persecution, how Christians responded to the threat of martyrdom, and how the martyrs were remembered and celebrated by the early Church.  We’ll also consider how the testimony of the martyrs, past and present, can serve to inspire us to greater faithfulness as we come face to face with a culture that is increasingly hostile to the Christian faith.  Presentation starts at 11:00am.  Bring a sack lunch.

LOCI - "Asceticism in the Early Church"

Lutherans have largely rejected monasticism and asceticism (discipline) for most of our history. Was this the right thing to do? Have we missed out on a whole strand of tradition? What might we glean and gain from the early days of the church, when men and women flocked to the deserts in search of the pure Christian life? Did Luther and the Lutherans even reject this great Christian tradition? Like ocean explorers, come delve into the vast uncharted world of Asceticism and the Early Church.

Join us for a stimulating presentation on asceticism in the early church with Rev. Kyle Mietzner, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Greensboro, NC.  Bring a sack lunch.
